Why did we have a China Day?

The idea for China Day came after a group of teachers attended a course about celebrating the Chinese New Year and was held in recognition of our new link with our partner school, Lvbo Primary in Dalian.

All classes were keen to participate and so each year group devised a range of activities based on the themes of Chinese food, art and culture. We chose the 19th February as it was the nearest school day to the start of the Spring Festival and the children were asked to wear their best clothes or traditional costumes, as it is the custom in China.

The day began with my assembly telling the Chinese New Year story and explaining why this was the year of the pig. The children then went into class to watch a power point presentation showing how the New Year would be celebrated in China. After break the children started the first of their three activities, moving into different groups as the day went on. At the end of the day some year groups finished with a final assembly talking through their experiences of the day.

It was a fabulous day. I cannot remember a day in school when there has been so much enthusiasm from the children (or when the smell of cooking throughout the school has been so strong). We shall certainly repeat this in future years and hope to start introducing aspects of Chinese culture into the curriculum for some year groups.
